Ft.Pickens, Pensacola, Fl. ???

Will be heading west on I-10 going to Ft.Pickens State Pk.. Should I go down RT.87, east of the city or go into town and go down I-110 and across the Pesacola Bay Bridge? Will be in a 35' Class'A' motorhome. Thanks:h
  • I have a nit to pick with you native Pensacolians. I went to the Naval Air Museum a couple of years ago. I was stationed aboard the USS Lexington at NAS Pensacola 40 years ago. You moved everything on me, including the USS Lexington. Its a museum in Corpus Christi, Tx. now. And there's more than one road, one bar, and two houses on Santa Rosa Island.
BTW, the Naval Air Museum is a must see. Its free, and you can easily spend an entire day there. Very kid friendly as well.
  • You're welcome. I hope this isn't when you're supposed to be here since the Park is temporarily closed. Watched a parade of RVs go by my house. So sad.
  • Just so you know - HWY 87 is being 4-laned and so you'll probably run into some construction. I haven't been up there since June, but it was still going on at that time and looked like they wouldn't be getting finished any time soon. Nothing horrible then, but just wanted you to be aware. It is a beautiful drive once you hit the Island. Part of it is through National Seashore land.

There is one gas station on the Island on the east end, where you'll come in if you take 87 I can't remember how the pumps are oriented. I know there are choices farther north on 87 which have pumps parallel to the building as we've used them in the past. If you take I-110, there is no handy gas on the Island for your RV. As AlabamaTraveler said, top off ahead of time, and I'd suggest you do it before you cross the 3 Mile Bridge into Gulf Breeze. There are 4 gas stations in Gulf Breeze, but at 36 ft none of them would be my first choice for fuel if I were you. The 2 most RV friendly ones are on the east side of Hwy 98, so they're hard to get to when you're heading south. We're a gasser, so if you need diesel you'd need to verify who has it. Not sure if all the stations around here do.

There's a big station on the right soon after you come off I-110 onto Chase Street. You would need to be in the far right lane. You can either exit back to the right out onto Chase Street - getting into the center lane or far left lane - or exit left out the other way (toward the water) and turn left onto Main Street. Both take you to the 3-Mile bridge which is clearly visible from the station so you can't miss which way you need to be going.

Norm is correct, there is some very good food here, both on the Island and in Gulf Breeze. And we are very casual out here on the Island. You're coming to a beautiful place that I'm blessed to call home. I live on the west end, about a mile from the beginning of the National Seashore land. If you have more questions ask away and we'll do our best to help

    Safe travels.
  • We always use I110, but we are coming from Alabama. For you, I recommend the 87 route. It is a beautiful drive once you get on the island. I also recommend topping off the fuel tank before going onto the island. There are not many pumps out there. We really like the campground at Ft Pickens.........have fun.
  • The choice is a 'toss up'. If you go south on 87,
you will turn left/east at the gulf (sound) on 98 for about
a block, then right/south over a free bridge onto the
island. Then a quick right turn and a pretty ride along
the beach...45 mph limit, but no traffic, and an enjoyable
ride. This leads to a left turn in a business area, to
Fort Pickens. There is a sign.

If you continue on I 10 into Pensacola, you turn onto I 110
and follow that through the city until it ENDS. Then a
milti-lane highway, a left turn, onto a 3 mile long bridge
(do NOT run out of fuel). This ends in Gulf Breeze FL,
and after about a mile of traffic, turn at the sign (right/
south) to the island, across a toll ($1) bridge. After less
than a mile turn right at the sign to Fort Pickens.

Fort Pickens is down a 7 mile road with NOTHING on it. Take
in your food and drinks. There is no food store on the island.
You must recross the bridge to find a grocery store.

On the island with Fort Pickens are FINE (not expensive or
    dress-up) restaurants......a pier.....good surf......beach.....

I recommend the highway 87/beach route.
