It depends where you are there are specific areas that are huachicolero territory, rather limiteed but purchasing from a 55 gallon steel drum is a sure bet it came from Pemex and not from ilegal source.

The huachicoleros use plastic square containers with a metal cage and or smaller plastic containers.

Through the years we have had to occasionally purchase fuel from a 55 gallon drum on the side of the road, not to our knowledge from huachicoleros.

We have always been amazed that they weren't gouging-just a peso or two above the pump price, if there had been a Pemex around. They could have been really charging!

The huachicoleros are maintaining the price of the stolen fuel, 12 pesos a liter of premium and 10 pesos for the magna, I guess there is honor in crime, it is stil theft, I recomend not to purchase this fuel, to dangerous to be associated with this illegal entrepreneurs.

Going back to the original post, many moons ago when premiun gasolina was one peso per liter, I would borrow my dad's or big sister's car on Saturday and take the girlfriend to the movies to the Cine Roble that colapsed in the 85 quake or the Cine Chapultepec now replaced with the Torre Mayor or others and then take her to dinner at the Chalet Suizo in the zona Roza for dinner and fill the tank full for about 100 pesos or less, I would ask the atendant to pump 10 pesos that would purchase 10 liters, I prefered to take my dads car since he kept the tank pretty full so I always had change left over, my sister on the other hand would goble the 10 pesos worth, I worked at a gift shop after school so I had some money not much but I engoyed la vida loca.

Dinner at the Chalet Suizo cost me 50 pesos with the tip and wine for two, the movie tickets were 17 pesos per nose with popcorn and soda, some times my dad's car would have a full tank, so maybe a couple of pesos worth of fuel, the station attendant would joke that he hopped the car would not drown with the enormous quantity of fuel, I always gave them a tip and I still give them a tip when filling today more than ever, since some of them make so little.

That was a long time ago, que pasen buena tarde, it is hot today, wen't out side and it feels like an oven, no breeze it 88 fareheight and in the morning it was 56 with clear blue sky, nice reminiscence got to go hasta la vista.

Today they are called "huachicolero" they tap into the gas pipe lines and extract the hydrocarbon and sell it at a discount from homes, some time ago the dummies taped into a propane pipe and created a veritable lake with a nice cloud since the gas is transported in a liquid state, luckyly it did not catch fire, but there have been several burnt people that have died when the milking goes wrong.

Pemex loses milions of pesos per year because of the ilisit theft, do not purchase fuel that is discounted it probably is a huachicolero selling it and that is theft.

Some remote comunities do not have a dedicated gas station and still sell from 55 gallon drums with a hand pump, those dispensing pumps are expensive, even if they are old, and some remote comunities only have a generator that runs for a few hours in the evening, they are not going to fire the generator for a few minutes to sell gasoline or Diesel.

Still some areas with no Pemex tation. But always an entrepreneur with a drum and a pump. I wonder if any of the cartels have their own stations? Do they have signs saying they are honest.

On the picture above, on the circle in the midle with the figure is the "charrito de pemex", since there was a number of persons that did not speak, write or read Spanish, pemex used that simbol to let people know where one could purchase gasoline, oil, kerosene, etc.

Specialy in the country side where there were no "gas stations" way up in the sierras, you went to the nearest "deposito de pemex" or you looked for the charro de pemex at a general store and they had the gasoline in 55 gallon drums with a hand pump, my dad had a funnel with a strainer to catch the rocks and some sand, when they changed barrels they sometimes would rest the pump on the ground, it being dirt and soaked with spilt fuel dirt would be transfered to the fuel tank that of course would plug the filter, dad had a special filter that coud be disasembled and cleaned on the 1948 war surplus Jeep.

In the 50's you could meet "el charrito de pemex" there was one guy with bowed legs, and dresed in a green charro outfit, I met him once at a feria del hogar (home fair) at the auditorio nacional (national auditorium) in Polanco, Mexico City, I do not know if they still use the simbol or not, I have not bee in the sierras in some years, maybe one of you will come across the charrito de pemex.
