Help information o on I84 through Columbia River Gorge

We are leaving Depoe Bay and plan to travel I84 through the Columbia River Gorge on Sunday to White Salmon Washington traveling with a truck camper. From White Salmon I plan to travel either highway 14 or cross the river and head east on I84 . l Met a guy who works for Oregon DOT today who advised me not to travel the gorge to to frequent high winds. He suggested taking highway 20 to 97 and go north (or even take highway 26 to Idaho and totally bypass the gorge).

How bad are the winds usually in October? I hate to miss a trip through the gorge but don't want to run into 60 or 70 mph winds like he described.
  • What everyone else says. Just take the Gorge route. I must have run this 100 times. (Well there was that terrible blizzard in '97!)
  • I am also from the area and have never had an issue with winds. I84 is a freeway but there are some great views. I personally love Hwy 14 on the Washington side and if you go as far as Patterson, there is a great little campground called Crow Butte on an island that is well worth the stop.
  • If your in a hurry I84 is your best choice. From Portland it is around 100 miles and your east of the cascades andmany winds die down considerably. Since your already part way down the coast, why not head east on 22 thru Salem to Bend and on 20 to Ontario. Colder, but much shorter.
  • I live in WA and have traveled through the Gorge on I84 many times. Never encountered 60 to 70 MPH winds. Doesn't mean they don't occur but they don't occur every day.

The Gorge is incredibly scenic and I84 is a 4 lane interstate so much better than WA 14. Check the weather be aware and enjoy the scenery.
  • Gorge winds will vary.
I-84 at high speeds are worse then WA 14 as speeds are down.
Weather for The Dalles, OR sounds pretty calm for sunday.
Not worth going 20 and 97.
