US 101 is fine, albeit a bit twisty in places. Have done it in a 36' MH with toad. I would stay away from SR 1, though, in a big rig. In fact, I don't think 38' motorhomes are permitted on Hwy 1.
The hardest part of your trip will be getting from S.F. across the Golden Gate Bridge. From there on 101 is a great RV friendly route. Just relax and smell the roses from the Oregon/ Ca. border and through Washington. The Oregon small little towns can slow you down to 30-40 mph. There are some great views of the ocean in Oregon but not as many in Washington.
What "djgarcia" said: "...some great views of the ocean in Oregon but not as many in Washington." About the only views of the Pacific on 101 in Washington is the approx 15 miles from Kalaloch north. Just like Oregon, the Washington coast is awesome, but you just don't see it from this highway. Use your road map and explore. Take the state highways that branch off 101 to the (1) Long Beach, (2) the Grayland, and/or (3) the Ocean Shores areas in SW Washington. They are all a ways off 101, but without doing so you never really experience the beaches in Washington.
