Houston, TX to Pittsburgh, PA

We are planning a trip from Houston, TX to Pittsburgh, PA in June. Looking for suggestions of places to stay along the way. We'd like to make the trip in 3 days, so we're really just looking for overnight stops. We'll be spending five days in the Pittsburgh area, visiting our son and daughter-in-law. Would also like to take a different route for the return trip. Any suggestions?
  • Thank you all for the suggestions! Will check out the places you mentioned. Dick_B, we have reservations for the Washington-Pittsburgh KOA for our stay there. Glad to hear some good feedback about it.

sdaniel, we have stayed at Lakeside in Livingston, LA before and really liked it.
  • by 3 days if you mean being in Pittsburgh at the end of the 3rd day this would work:
    1st stop - I-40 to North Little Rock KOA - 7 hours.
2nd stop - from Nashville, north on I-65 to Kentucky exit 53. Cave Country RV Park. (call ahead to make sure they have a site). 6.5 hours
3rd stop - from Louisville, I-71 north to Cincinnati, then I-70 into Pittsburgh. 7 hours.
If you mean 3 nights and the 4th day in Pittsburgh, then we can adjust the route and stops accordingly. I think the above route is very aggressive.
On the return trip, we usually take I-77 south to I-81 but there are steep grades and tunnels if they don't bother you, it's a gorgeous drive! I-81 to
I-40. In Dandridge TN is Anchor Down Resort. Or if you have more time, we like River Plantation in Sevierville TN.
From Sevierville, take I-59 to I-20. Before you get to Meridian MS, take US45 north about 4 miles to Benchmark Coach & RV Park in Marion MS. Then from Meridian MS, take I-59 south to I-12, Then I-10. If you need another stop, we like Lakeside RV park in Livingston LA off I-12. Call ahead for pull thru.

All of our road trips always go through GATLINGBURG TN and the SMOKY MTNs Park. We also love the SHERANDO Camp in the I81/I64 area near Waynesboro VA. Another great campgound is on I59 south of Chattanooga at the Trenton GA exit called CLOUDLAND CANYON... We love the high country style camping around the NATL FOREST areas.

Have not made many trips above the Virginia Line areas but PA has some great high country campsites. Camping in the high country near Thurmont MD US15 and the Catoctin Mtn area is on our list to do...

We too also like to use the GOOGLE MAPS - just type in CAMPGROUNDs in the search window and it will show them as you move along the roads... You can actually zoom down and see the campgound layout if you like.

  • I use Maps.Yahoo.com and put in the starting and ending locations to get their suggested route. You can then click and drag portions of the route to be different than what they suggest and it will show the additional miles/time for that new route. There are other mapping programs out there.
Do you have a place to stay in Pittsburgh? If you like hills/mountains you will LOVE the Pittsburgh area. We stay at the Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA where you need 1st gear to get from the office to the camping spots (no kidding).
