I want to go around Houston traveling on I10 from east to west, sometime this summer and was thinking of using I610 to alleviate some of the city traffic. Would also like staying in a decent campground along that route for some sightseeing with the toad. Any suggestions, either for a decent campground and/or a different route?

I would just take I10 straight thru. Loop 610 is the same kind of road with the same or worse traffic, just more of it. If you want to avoid traffic badly enough to pay big bucks in toll charges I would recommend Sam Houston Toll Road. If you take that route around the south side, All Star RV Resort on 59 next to PPL is a good place to stay.

No question-- just stay on I10. As long as you avoid rush hour, should not be an issue.All other routes are WAY longer and/or very costly.

So how much is the toll for a coach with 3 axles and then the toad with two and would guess that they count it the same as a vehicle with 5 axles? I did see a toll chart but can't quite figure out if we're talking the whole southern parkway or not?

I left Houston in 2011 after living there 38 years. I would drive straight through I-10 between 8pm and 6am but check ahead for construction especially on weekends. I wouldn't waste time or fuel going around one of the loops, Houston is a huge town.

Galveston to Rayford Crossing is S-N. I 45 all the way.

For those headed E-W it won't do you much good.

I been reviewing this recommendation and it looks like a nice stop after leaving Galveston as well, if we should choose to go by that route. Especially with RT6 being slow and maybe leaving late in the day. After all we're out there amongst them to view America from a big windshield, smell the roses and not to try for any speed records.

X3 on Rayford Crossing. It's a nice park and 1st class, plus you can enjoy the Woodlands which is probably the only beautiful area around Houston!!! IMHO

For the first question, definitely stay on I-10. If you do that, try Steven F. Austin State Park in San Felipe, which is just west of Katy, a Houston suburb. Beautiful setting and has a golf course. As Dennis said, Lake Conroe (40 mi. N of downtown H-Town) and Galveston(40 Mi S) both on I-45 have great state park or forest service camps. I recommend Camp Cagle (Forest Service) at the NE corner of Lake Conroe to everyone. State Park in Galveston is also nice. Just a hint about Galveston in the summer: There is a rule of thumb in Houston that if you come from either coast, give yourself a year before going to the beach in Galveston or you will be depressed. Not what you are used to on the first and second coasts. In the summer, with the humidity (90) pretty much the sky, the water and the sand all seem gray.

Hwy 6 is a city street with many stop lights on that section. Its suburban Houston. No problem in a MH but not fast either.

OK, say we should visit Galveston and avoid Houston altogether. How would route 6 be for our departure from there and getting back on I10 west?
Anybody familiar with that road? I have patrolled it some with the little google man and it looks to be reminiscent of old America. Looks like one might catch RT 99 eventually and go through Cinco Ranch before getting back on I10 for a distance of about 75 miles

There's a thought and do like the looks of Galveston Island State Park!
This would pretty much eliminate Houston altogether and don't have a big hankering for these huge cities anyway.
