You could take 81 down to 64 then 288 around Richmond to 95 or 81 to 77 but that's a pretty long way around

If you do take 95 you WILL NOT be allowed to go through either of the Baltimore Tunnels because you are carrying propane.. it is prohibited.. you will either have to take the beltway west around Baltimore or take the Key bridge.. it is narrow.
Plan your trip to avoid 6 to 9 am or 4 to 7pm Monday thru Friday rush "hour" traffic... it is brutal around Washington and Baltimore.
Also It seems I almost always get stuck in some traffic jams between Washington and Richmond (may just be my luck)..

I go 95 all the time and NEVER have been stopped from going through the tunnel.
We are leaving for MB next Saturday morning about 8am from outside Poughkeepsie. I use to go straight through....13.5 hours....but the wife hate it so now we stop just north of Richmond at the Americamps...then finish the second day. I take the loop around Richmond...a couple miles more but faster and I never get into traffic.

spadoctor, which loop are you referring to? Looks like Americamps would be a convenient stop over for us also; I am just a bit south of you. Do you take 95 at Port Chester, or go TZ Bridge and down 287 to avoid the city?

I think he means I-295 around Richmond. Not the best road in the country, but the consensus is that it's better than going I-95 through Richmond.

You can do the TZ Bridge to I-287, or you can take the GSP to I-95 in Edison. I would not recommend I-95 over the GWB. I did the GSP route on a Sunday and it was good. Everyone says to stay in the middle lane for bridge clearance, but I didn't see any really low clearances the whole route.

BTW: the prohibition of propane in the Baltimore Tunnel is well documented. Just because he hasn't been caught...

Actually, going straight through Richmond is better AT THE MOMENT. There is no construction to speak of. If there are no accidents, you're talking about 15 minutes MAX from top to bottom. The 295 loop adds a half hour or so. I did this just a few months ago, went straight through at 4PM on a Monday before Thanksgiving, and then a week later, in the fog and rain at about 9PM, went the 295 loop, just for S & G going northbound. I felt like the bypass lasted forever.

Seems like Hudson River Valley to Myrtle Beach is a well worn route - we'll be doing it in three weeks time as well! We will probably take the GSP - that was the way we came back up in September. Probably going to take three days to keep the kids from getting cabin fever, but weather will be a factor in that decision.

Hawksred11, where are you staying in Myrtle Beach? We are planning on going to Myrtle Beach Travel Park in North Myrtle Beach. Did you mean 3 days to drive down from NY? We did that going to Nashville last year; that was 15 hours, this is supposed to be about 12, so was planning on one overnight stop in Ashland, VA.

I went straight thru Richmond in the middle of the day last Oct and never had to slow down. I prefer taking I78 to I81 then I66 to Rt17 to I95 to bypass big city traffic. Americamp is fine for overnight.
