As you travel through Atlanta, if you come in on I85, stay on it and then take 75 South as they divide. I would seriously taking the I85-I75 connector straight through time rather than I285 around town. 285 is always extremely busy with lots of big trucks pushing all the lanes, since they can't go through town. Good to know. Signage is clear to switch to I75? I'll have been driving for awhile by that point and don't want to miss it. Also is I75 that far north similar to I75 in lower Florida with rest stops and fuel stops part of the road instead of having to exit on local streets?
As for the flooding, I can totally sympathize. Not only did we have Sandy but all the lesser runner ups over the years. As you say, stressful, messy, and disheartening.
