Hurricane Matthew and I-95

Im looking at a trip from NY to Florida departing NY Sunday 10-9. I've already delayed a week due to the hurricane and don't want to wait any longer . The storm itself should be gone by the time I reach the Carolinas Sunday afternoon. My concern is fuel availability in the southern states . Gasbuddy has old info. Any recommendations on online resources or perhaps first hand knowledge?

You need to plan another option... The locals don't need tourists causing more congestion and confusion. Campgrounds and hotels are full even several hundred miles from the coast.. I95 was the border line for "mandatory" evacuations in South Carolina and Georgia and most of that area is not opened back up yet. The storm has not gotten really into NC yet.. They are still predicting flooding (from rain and from storm surge) as well as tornadoes in NC.

Please be considerate of the folks that have evacuated who live in the area and don't even know what things are like in their homes yet. Please find another way to go, if you absolutely MUST go now.

I understand and appreciate your viewpoint. I will point out though that I own a home in South Florida. I am also anxious to physically be there to check on it. I would like to do so when it is safe to travel, and to know when this maybe happens I need information more detailed than a reporter standing in the rain yelling into a mic. Which is why I asked for assistance here in either personal observation or pointing out an internet resourse more detailed than I have yet found. Many thanks to those who have been able to share information so far.
I understand the disruptive element a hoard of lookylou's will add to an already difficult situation and have no desire to add to it. Im just looking to find reliable info . If its prudent to change my route I shall. I am looking at 30 hours from now, not 5 or 6.
Best of luck to those in harms way.
  • Just heard on weather channel that flooding in NC has caused issues with I95 near Fayetteville... so fairly far inland. Again, I encourage you to see another route and not interfere with locals trying to recover from storm.

  • I-95 is closed in the southern part of South Carolina.
Most campgrounds around I-95 are full of us "evacuees" from the coast.
Gas would depend on if the stations have power. The shortages were from people filling up prior to the storm. The further from the coast you are, the better. But the rain is still coming down and the low places get flooded easily. Your call but be sure you have places to stop along the way. Trees are still falling along I-95....

    Wrong. BAD plan.
    Be safe, not sorry.

The storm is moving slower than predicted.

AND it will take at least 3 days AFTER the storm passes for traffic and gas and food to get back to anywhere near normal. And anything east of 95 might still be under water, and parts of 95 itself maybe.

If you insist on keeping to your schedule instead of watching the reports and being careful, avoid 95 completely. Take 85 through Charlotte to Atlanta and then 75 south. Or another west route through Atlanta.

Note that there might be parts of Georgia and Fla. east of 95 that might not be safely accessible for WEEKS; maybe parts of 95 itself.

P.S. This is not idle speculation (mostly). I am presently sitting in Charlotte and it has been raining pretty much continuously for about 24 hours now. Might be some things closed due to flooding even this far west.
  • We're near I-75 in north Florida and there is no shortage here, didn't even get much wind or rain. But the power was off until a few minutes ago. On the coast may be a different story.

Tho my brother in law lives near the coast around Daytona and there wasn't much damage there.

Im going all the way south, missed by the storm. If its doable I need go, I have a finite window in which I can stay down there.
Been trying to find a website with real time status , especially on the closure. So far no luck.
  • i heard 95 is closed right now in a few sections due to flooding. this is in SC
