Hwy 101 In Oregon

Done it many times end to end - one of the most beautiful drives you can do. There will be traffic and lots of pull offs - don't rush; enjoy the beauty.

Where are you staying - it will be very hard to find spots w/o reservation this time of year.

The place with Paul Bunyan out in front is The Trees of Mystery, nice potty stop.

From Tillamook south to LC is not on the Coast but inland somewhat. Just before LC is the Portland turnoff and the Town of Otis. Otis Café is great place to eat, especially breakfast.

In Depot Bay is Gracie's Sea Hag, great chowder. Great Taffy next door. Parking for RV/towed is minimal.

Sea Lions Caves has RV parking lot. Summer time is NOT Sea Lion time, they are out to sea then. Calving is winter and better.

During the week of the eclipse is going to be rough and you can expect tight LEO enforcement of parking and stopping roadside. It's been in the papers up there. Depot Bay is just south of the travel line for the eclipse.

This is so true, as for size semis with 53' trailers travel daily. Biggest issue is towns as traffic get slow and backed up a bit. I also tend to drive in the left lane through towns as the sign post and idiots trying to get on cut it close.

Just drove that way a couple of weeks ago, no problem. Do fill up before the 101 or when you see a good size fuel stop. Access for big rigs are few and far between on the 101. There are enough, just start looking when you are 1/2 down.

In California, Crescent City and the Redwoods Parks are pretty fun. Even if you're just driving through, detour onto the Avenue of Giants as you head south. It's easy with an RV, and has fun "tourist-trap" type stuff. We've also done the gondola ride, can't remember the name of the place, but it has a giant Paul Bunyan out front. It's worth a stop.

We already have reservations for the eclipse. I really appreciate all the replies. The more info we have, the better the trip. After Oregon, we plan to head south into California. Chuck

Traffic may be especially bad, if you're driving through the zone of totality the weekend of the 19th. Sounds like everyone and their uncle is heading down to see the eclipse. We'll be there as well. Every campsite along 101 is booked that weekend, so hopefully you have reservations. It's a great drive. We've done it several times, in different seasons.

My family likes the Fort George Brewery in Astoria, Fort Clatsop, the Tillamook Cheese Factory and the Sea Lion Caves.

Traveled that route many times with our 65' combination. No problems seeing the views but we usually stayed at casinos along the way as we liked the large parking lots.

We will be there in a little more than a week. Just finishing up at Glacier NP. Chuck
