Hwy 101 in Oregon

Planning a trip down 101 from Victoria South. Pulling a 34 footer with an F-350 so will be 55 ft long. Think of any problems to be encountered? Also recommendations for camping or sites to see? Probably go In Sept to avoid all the summer traffic, so any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks, Don
  • There some twisty bits, like in southern Washington, but the most serious issue would be the tunnel near the sea-lion caves (Oregon coast), it you are -over- 13 ft tall you might want to check that out more closely.
  • As others have reported, there are no problems on 101 with any sized rig other than a lot of traffic in the summer and early fall. Once in a while, after storms, there can be road closures due to mudslides and some of the detours you'll want to avoid. You can scope it out with your TV before taking the detour and hole up somewhere, if necessary, until 101 is reopened.
  • Lots of posts on US101.
As for camping? September is still high season on the Oregon coast. Plan to get reservations. Any of the Oregon State parks are great, plus Netarts Bay RV park, west of Tillamook, Winchester Bay RV park south of Reedsport. If you have the time, plan on no more than 50 miles a move and then sit for a day or two to enjoy the area.
  • Donald,

There will still be quite a bit of summer traffic in September, but the weather is likely to be pretty nice (perhaps the best of the year). The Oregon State Parks are very nice for staying at, but you may want to consider getting reservations.

  • We followed 101 from northern CA all the way to the end in WA. Pulling our 34 ft fifth wheel, we had no problems at all. Just don't expect to run at high speed. Enjoy the trip it is very scenic when it's not raining...heh.
