Hwy 200 Great Falls to Missoula?

Can anyone tell me about this road. It would sure cut out a lot of miles. We have a Class C 30 footer

  • Yeah its fine except for the current construction. Previous poster said 8 miles so shouldn't be too bad
  • Took that route a few years ago with toad in tow. Good road, no problems. If I remember correctly, there is a really neat gift shop along that stretch.
  • We drove over it twice in June with our rig. Semis and all types of RV's were on it when we were. It is a fine road that tops out at about 5500' at the continental divide. How every there is seriuos construction on an 8 mile stretch starting just east of Lincoln and going on east. It is passable, but you will be going slow, real slow. I have never seen construction done they way the are doing it. It will be very rough in places and if it has rained you will get very muddy. Be sure to stop at the gift shop on the west side of Lincoln if you like Jerrkey. They have all kinds of flavors. It is about 180 miles across from Great Falls to Missoula. Go and enjoy.
  • 200 is a great road. It follows the Blackfoot River for a good bit of the way. It's very scenic and if you're a fisherman this route will take a while....cause you'll want to stop and wet your fly around every corner. Traffic may be favorable going thru Helena but 200 is soooo pretty.
  • Semi's and RVs take it all the time.
The climb from Fort Shaw to the pass has some steep grades, and one curve near the summit that is reverse banked.
I often do not take that route from Great Falls due to the high traffic, but rather take I-15 to Helena, then US-12 across to Garrison then get on I-90. Time wise it is anything from a little longer (usually) to a little shorter (Fridays can be really bad). This is due to the number of grades you have to climb, on a two lane highway, with semi's and under-powered RVs going up the hills
US-12 is four lanes for much of the grade.
On 200 there are NO services from Fort Shaw to Lincoln.

I don't know how many (literally hundreds) of times I've taken either US-12 or 200 over that route
