Missoula, MT to Great Falls, MT

Two routes:

I-90 to Hwy 12 through Helena, then north on I15.

I-90 to HWY 200 to US89 to I15 then to Great Falls.

I will be in a 06 Chevy Diesel towing a 24' TT.

Is HWY 200 annoying for towing a trailer on? Rough, hilly, etc?

  • Thanks for the tips.
I'm doing an RV delivery to Great Falls and have never been up that way before.
  • We used yMt-200 last summer twice.Once west and again later east. At the time there was construction east of Lincoln for a few miles and it was slow and rough going. It probably is done now. At Lincoln there is a little store worth stopping at on the west side. We have family in both Great Falls and Missoula and they travel that road quit often. Highest point is Rogers Pass at the divide at about 5200'. I found nothing hard about the ups and downs with our rig. Go and enjoy the scenery.
  • I'll be on it next Monday, east in the morning with the trailer, then returning afternoon empty.
  • Actually I was local and I tended to use either, depending.
The grade dropping down on the east on US-12 is less then the grade on MT-200.
In the summer MT-200 see's a lot of people from Great Falls (etc) headed up to the lakes north of Clearwater Junction, that means a lot of RVs on that road.
Summer, east bound it's a 50/50 call for me, west bound, Fridays I would never take MT-200.
Winter I always took US-12, more four-lane, better passing, better road maintenance.
  • MT 200 is a good highway, not very much traffic. When I lived in Missoula that is the highway I always took when heading to Great Falls. US 12 has a lot more traffic and going east the pass has a downhill grade that's not fun in the wintertime. Check with the locals, they'll recommend MT 200.
