Actually I was local and I tended to use either, depending.
The grade dropping down on the east on US-12 is less then the grade on MT-200.
In the summer MT-200 see's a lot of people from Great Falls (etc) headed up to the lakes north of Clearwater Junction, that means a lot of RVs on that road.
Summer, east bound it's a 50/50 call for me, west bound, Fridays I would never take MT-200.
Winter I always took US-12, more four-lane, better passing, better road maintenance.
