Hwy 209 from Port Jervis to Kingston, NY

Thinking about trying this route in a few weeks. How is the road and has anybody stayed at Roundout RV in Accord, NY?

I called them about reservations and they said yes to a reservation but no guarantee as to which spot would be available. Still undecided about staying there. Jelleystone at Platz has large pull thru's so I may go there.

  • Thanks for the replies. I have used 209 between Stroudsburg, Pa and Port Jervis many times, but never tried the northern section between Port Jervis and Kingston. Don't mind going slower during part of trip as long as the road is decent to drive.
  • 209 is fine. It is interesting but it's a 2 lane with little towns, but nothing challanging.
  • I like 209 it is a nice break from interstate driving but it is slow going 40-45mph. It has one small town right hand city turn but if you just go through town another 8 miles you will still come to I84. It keeps me out of all the high speed driving through NJ and around Scranton. I am just slowing down and enjoying life more now.
  • I'm in the area quite frequently. Hwy 209 is a one lane in each direction highway with some traffic lights here and there with plenty of twists/turns. I've pulled a small TT from the Poconos all the way to Ellenville on 209 a few times. It's ok and can be slow going, so I'd rather pull on a larger highway.

If I were coming from Port Jervis I'd take I-84 east to the NYS Thruway and head north to New Paltz. There is a small stretch between New Paltz and Roundout Valley on Rt.44/55 through Minnewaska State Park Preserve that could be tight with a Class A. It is only about 4-5 miles, with one hairpin turn, some twists/turns but very scenic.

I was at Roundout Valley in Accord NY when it was a Jellystone CG. Now it is owned by Encore and I do not care to camp at corporate owned resorts. We now stay at Yogi Bear Jellystone at Lazy River which is about 6 miles outside of New Paltz. This is a privately owned CG with the owners living in the CG. This CG is absolutely immaculate. Any problems the owner is right there to correct the situation.
