Hwy 287

We are planning a trip to Glacier Park and the Tetons this summer. I was looking at taking Hwy 287 out of Helena to the West entrance of Yellowstone, then 287/26 to Jackson. Anything I should be aware of on this route? Is there a better route from Helena to Jackson that does not involve the Interstate?

Also, if we arrive midweek will there be a problem getting a site at Grant Village campground in early August? Thanks!
  • I was in YS last July and campsites were hard to come by . We ended up staying at the south end just outside the park.....Flagg Ranch Campground with plenty of room . It was a pretty nice place too.
  • On Rt 287, several miles before Rt 191 and just after the junction of 287 and 87 is Quake Lake Visitors Center. Very interesting story about the earthquake in 1959 that moved some mountain and part of Hebgen Lake. It also buried a nearby campground. Plenty of parking.
  • Thanks CloudDriver & TexasShadow. Have been to Yellowstone twice in the offseason, but was not sure what the west side was like in midsummer. Would not mind spending a couple of nights if it was not a total zoo. Thanks!
  • Haven't done 287, but no problem (other than possible traffic) getting through Yellowstone to Jackson. You can also take route 20 down to Idaho Falls and then route 26 to hit Jackson from the south, but it's a lot longer.

Route 22 between Victor and Jackson is not an option due to steep grades/sharp curves.
