Hwy 287 Tx

How is hwy 287 between Ennis and hwy 20.A lot of small town with red light or is a strait hwy with no stop
  • Only problem in the FW area is 820 north of downtown FW and from downtown FW to DFW. If you stay south and go west of FW past Weatherford, then past Abilene to Lubbock then Amarillo. Easily towing and faster than all the small towns, though longer miles..
  • Yes 287 is the way we always go up to Amarillo, then you can make choices. If you go farther north on 87 and come out in Walsenburg then take 160 to Durango. (Google reports there may be road closures this way).
From Amarillo the way we go most of the time is to stay on I-40 to Clines Corner up through Santa Fe, Chama, Pagosa Springs, on 84 to hit 160. This is a beautiful drive! (Don't know about any road closures, but other posters might).
  • Thank you for the info to all. That the road I will take when I go to Durango.
  • Don't know where you're going when you get to I-20. If your going west then take 287 out o Ennis. If your going East take 45. Either way good roads.
  • Just drove from Houston to Durango and went 287... Very good road! Pulling 5vr
  • Are you just looking at it as a shortcut to get from US 75 to westbound I-20?
If so, as I recall most major crossings are via underpass/overpass. Very few traffic lights.
  • Ennis to Ft Worth is OK.
Then it'll take you near downtown. Not a big deal if it is not rush hour. Just have to watch the signs closely as you'll merge with I35 for a while, then split off north of Loop 820.
The reset of the way north is our preferred route also.
  • I'm not sure where Ennis is, but between DFW and Amarillo 287 is a good road with occasional red lights in towns. Not enough to really slow you down tho. It's our preferred route west.
