hyde park rd (475) NM

I'm interested in camping this summer at the National Forest Black Canyon Campground outside of Sante Fe, New Mexico. I'm wondering about driving up there with my 36 foot motorhome on New Mexico Highway 475, Hyde Park Road.

Any comments?
  • Street view on Google is your best info. The road is a good paved road, as for staying the summer there or how good the camp sites are that I am not sure about. There again use the satellite view on Google maps.

Last time I camped there was in 1967 on a ski trip. We had a good time but I can't say I remember much about the campground.
  • I'm satisfied with the campground. I'm just worried about getting there, how steep and/or narrow the road is.
  • The road is not steep or even very curvy. After passing the campground it does start to climb up to toward the ridge but is not bad even then. From Santa Fe up to the campground the road follows the creek and is a gentle grade with easy turns.
  • The worse part is getting onto the road from Paseo De Peralta Street onto Bishop Lodge Rd. It's a very tight turn, then another tight turn onto Artist Rd. which becomes HIde Park Rd. Just be prepared for some tight turns, shouldn't be a problem.

Los Alamos is a very neat small city in itself. Free bus system with very neat buses. Very pretty setting up in the high country. Somewhat of a gated community as well. We only drove through & stopped at a SuperMarket. A nice town. http://www.visit.losalamos.com/

    Santa Fe (Eating):
We had very good Asian from Jinja Bar & Bistro in Santa Fe last summer. Just stumbled onto it in a thunder/rain storm. We did carry out, but it was a very nice restaurant. Went back last summer (2014) & ate in the restaurant with our daughter & grandson. All enjoyed the food.

Someone at the AAA office recommended Tortilla Flats in Santa Fe; it prove to be very good as well.

Normally, we would eat on the Plaza, from Cart Vendors, such as Roque's Carnitas. Cart Cuisine, but they were not there that week-end. Due to the 'Santa Fe Indian Market', "a 91-year-old Native art market", we didn't find the normal street food venders on the Plaza. We did eat once at one of the 'Indian' vendors, but the lines were extremely long. Also at a roasted corn vendor.
  • It's a climb, but not excessively steep. And the speed limit is low anyway so you'll just gear down and take it easy.

The view from the ridge above and west of the CG is really nice, if you feel up to some exercise.
