I-35 Dallas to Austin

Is I-35 Dallas to Austin TX under construction?? We will be going down in January pulling 35' 5th wheel. Would going over to 281 at Denton be a better route?? We are headed to Alamo TX. Thanks

  • I didn't mind 35 at all as I thought traffic moved really well- except Austin. As previously stated everything ground to a halt. The 18 wheeler in front of me smoked 'em up trying to get stopped which caused a real pucker factor in our rig. That in turn caused some excitement for my buddy following us. Skip Austin if you can
  • IH-35 has been under construction since 1960 and will be under construction in the year 2060. I frequently travel it and avoid it whenever possible. U.S. Highway 281 is a very good alternative as are several other routes. If you must travel 35 the best time to do so is late at night or early morning because after about noon it's a mess and traffic can and will grind to a halt for the first fender bender. This often results in a backup for both directions as the gawkers have to slow to a crawl in order to view the carnage.
  • We take I-44/US 281 from SW Oklahoma to San Antonio often. Nice easy drive. There is a huge WalMart on 281 on the north side of Marble Falls, west side of the road. It's easy in/out for fuel. Just a few miles south of San Antonio on I-37, there are several fueling locations. We usually use one of them on the east side of the I-state.
Wichita Falls to Marble Falls: 254 miles
Marble Falls to San Antonio: 90 miles
San Antonio to Alamo: 250 miles
  • Yes there is some construction...as always. The traffic thru it, Dallas to Austin, is handled very well, but the lane shifts and the closed in feeling of the pavement between the concrete barrier and the white line makes me sit alittle closer to the edge of the seat...only for a few miles. I44 and 281 is more casual, but has the above mentioned traffic controls. 19 miles longer if you take the I44/281 route, OK City to San Antonio vs I35.
  • The construction on I-35 is not major, but can be constricting. Some folks can't stand it, some folks have no problem.

281 is a valid alternative though I wouldn't drive the extra mileage.

The only 'issue' with 281 is a relative lack of truck stops and gas stations with room to get a long MH or trailer into.

But it is a less stressful drive than I-35.

I don't like the congestion in Temple or in Austin - but its not bad enough to go around.

You just do not want to cross Fort Worth or Austin anywhere close to rush hour.
  • We just came the i35 from Georgetown yesterday .i have crew cab dally & 35 ft Jayco 5er.no problem either way from Dallas. Either way.
281 is 4 lane most of the way but lots of stop lights
  • Yes, construction is a problem. We traveled I-35 going to San Antonio for Thanksgiving. Road construction in Temple, Belton, and Waco. I opted to go 130 (toll road) from Georgetown to Buda to get off I-35. 281 is an excellent route. Safe travels.
  • There is on going construction in several areas. But they are doing a really good job of keeping it from affecting traffic flow much. We have been I-35 from Dallas to Georgetown 3 times since September. Traffic flows at or above posted speed virtually all the way.
Only delay we had was when a truck lost its load and they diverted traffic to the service road.
  • Yes, in both directions and it can be a mess since it goes on for well over 40 miles. They close the highway in either direction at random in several different places, and I don't know if its publicized other than road signs signs saying whats going on.
