I-80 from Salt Lake City to Omaha

We are on our way back to south FL & are currently working our way north in Utah for another week or so before heading east & then south to FL.

Would I-80 be the easiest passage in our 34 FT Class A towing a Honda?

Anything interesting to see or good places to stay on that route?

Thanks,
Cass & Lyn
  • We drove I80 west from Iowa to Salt Lake City last October. One suggested stop is Kearney, Neb and visit the Great Platt River Road Archway that spans I-80. We stayed overnight in a convenient park and toured the Archway that afternoon. A note, heading west is a gradual uphill climb--heading east will be a little downhill. Although it will probably not make much difference.

"Easiest" is always going to be subjective. However, in this case, this is likely the easiest route by most standards. There's no high mountain passes to go over, the highest point will be under 9000 feet east of Laramie WY, in a rather long climb out of the Laramie Valley up to the highest point on I-80. From that point east it will be all down hill...literally.
H E R E is the elevation chart for this route.

As mentioned prior, wind WILL be a factor. If you can get a good tail wind, it's not so bad, and this time of year, it's not likely you'll have a head wind heading eastbound. Most likely will be southerly winds, which can be a mixed blessing.
  • Very windy and extremely heavy truck traffic every time we have been on it.
  • If you do I-80, don't miss Little America. Just one of those things you need to do for no reason. As I remember the "X miles to Little America" signs started at he CA/NV border.
  • that's a major truck route. my BIL used to take US 30 which paralled 80 because of that.
