Unfortunately we will need to stick with I70 going out. We have reservations and need to be in places at specific dates. We may try US50 another time, if we go out to CA again.
I was mostly asking for what it's like on the I80 route. There are few towns and looked like not much to see through that part of Nevada. So I was curious what thoughts people had about the route if they had taken it before.
My advice was based on travelling both of these routes (I-80 and US 50) well over 100 times each. Unless you have some pressing need to stay on I-80, I'd opt for US 50. And US 50 is more scenic than US 6. If you must take I-80, Elko is the biggest burg with the most amenities along I-80. But between crossing the Black Rock Desert and then the Salt Flats, you're in for a long, monotonous drive. If you're planning a summer trip, the Las Vegas route can be exceedingly hot.
Ken , surprised it took you "100's of times" to decide to avoid I-80 - Couple trips and I- swore it off. Truck traffic and slab joints will keep me off it for EVER.
Rt 50 would be my choice - and add couple more days with a chance to get my feet wet in the Colorado with the kids on the way (Moab/Colorado River).
I am still confused as to what the question IS?
I-80 IMHO is not FUN.
Rt 50 would give you a change of scenery, and a stop in Ely would work. Then on to Moab and follow the Colorado River out on Rt 128 to I-70 in Colorado.
Then you have a variety of routes to get back to ? in Colorado.
