I took both routes when I was working in Nevada as a geologist many years ago. We'd fly into SLC and then head out I-80 if we were working the Wells/Elko/Carlin area and US 50 if we were working the Ely/Tonopah area, although we did take US 93 down from Wendover on occasion. If we were working the Eureka/Austin corridor, it was a tossup. I worked out there for 16 years so had many opportunities to sample all sorts of routes. One time we even took the back road through Callao (UT) and down through Gandy to get to US 50. Now that's getting into the middle of nowhere!
