I-80 through Sacramento westbound...the construction zone.

We are heading into Vacaville with the 5th wheel on the 7th of August and with the new construction (or re-construction) we were wondering how much of a disaster it may be. There are two choices.....Hiway 70 through the Feather River Canyon and over to I-5 to 505, which is where the RV Park we are staying is located OR I-80 and through the gauntlet. I know it is only 8 or 10 miles max but was curious as to how bad it may be...
Thank you

  • That time of day is really hit or miss. One day it can be completely empty, another day it's bumper to bumper. Eastbound has gotten better because most folks know what to expect now. Westbound just changed, so it's going to be a headache. I'd take one of the detours and avoid the whole mess. They won't add that much time to the trip and you'll be less stressful.
  • It will (unfortunately) be around noon or one...By car we are 3 hours from Sac. Not really sure what time we will leave the house but probably 8ish in the AM. I really did not care to travel through the eastbound mess by car so I can hardly wait until I pull the 5th wheel through that disaster...And there is always a bottleneck in West Sac where 80 connects with 50 just before Eppies and the Causeway...
  • Oh, another detour option:

Take Watt Ave south to Hwy-50 west. Hwy 50 merges with I-80 west just before West Sacramento. Again, won't save time, but will detour the construction mess.
  • What time of day are you traveling through? What day of the week?

I think they are about to switch sides - they've been working on the eastbound side and it's been down to one lane for the "expressway" and one lane for the "local traffic". The westbound was just split like that this past weekend (I believe).

If you hit it on the weekdays between 7-9 a.m. or 3-6 p.m., it can be pretty slow. I've done it with my C at those times, but I wouldn't with a trailer. Reason: people are idiots and tend to sit their cars between the TV and the TT/5er and then expect YOU to find a way to get them out from between them. That stretch is down to one lane in places with no place to move out of the way when those idiots come up beside you.

If you're going later in the evening or earlier in the morning, then you should be OK. Midday can be hit or miss. HOWEVER: because the westbound has just been changed to provide the expressway lane, folks will be messed up and chance of accidents is much greater. It might be worth it to go around.

    An option for detour (westbound):

Take Watt Ave exit and go south to El Camino, turn right on El Camino and follow it all the way to the I-5 connection. This will entail lots of stop lights, but you can bypass I-80 construction completely. Won't save time, but you won't have to worry about folks merging on you.
