Sacramento construction any better this year?

Last year heading south the construction was the worst in Sacramento. On I-5 from Seattle to San Diego it was most messed up. We like to over night at a place in Woodland just north of Sac.

If still messed up, any local advice on here that could provide best way to by pass or is frwy still the best? We prefer I-5 just because 99 has tons of on ramps/off ramps.

I live in the area. Weekends are *usually* not a problem. But on weekdays, regardless of construction, the traffic simply has gotten out of hand. From Woodland, I5 going south will be busiest during the morning commute hours. I had to go into Sacto last Thursday. Thought I was going to be smart and leave at 8am, hoping the commuters would be at work. Wrong. From Woodland to Sacto was a parking lot. There is a ton of traffic coming off of 99 from Yuba City headed into Sacto. My best advice is to look at the traffic maps and plan your departure through Sacto based on that on weekdays. It is usually lighting up around 9am.
  • We just came through there on Oct 29th and found I-5 ok. It is better than it was 2 years ago. I traveled I-5 has far as Lost Hills. At that point there is paving going on south of there.

  • BTW Several times a year we take 405 through LA MIDDAY and never had any significant problems. We are going to Oceanside but could cross over on 76 from I15 if we went the 210 route.
  • Basically I expect heavy traffic and beat up roads in any urban or snow area.

Interesting comments about 99. There was another post about 99 being repaved with 3 lanes south of Sac and CA wants it to be an Interstate. So I'm wondering. :@
  • We went from Seattle to San Diego on I5 six weeks ago. The Stockton area still bad on I5. Some of the areas on 99 now better than 5. But some areas on 99 still suck. When going through LA we went 210 all the way through to I15. A year ago we hit a pothole so large going from S57 to E10 that it damaged the front right bearing and oil seal. No getting around the fact that either 99 or 5 south of Sacramento is terrible. Both are in disgraceful condition.

When we went north we took 395. A slower but WAY more enjoyable road. If you have the time cut over to 395 at Mt Shasta.
