I 95 overnight camping

I'm planning a spring trip to Darlington raceway and am wondering about places to stop for the night between Ashland, VA and Roanoke Rapids, NC

I'm familiar with the Americamps CG in Ashland (and Bass Pro Shops) and the Carolina Crossings CG in NC but looking for info on places to stop for the night in between the two.

It can be a CG, Walmart or Rest Area or any thing else that is legal and safe and is easy in/out

I would like to get get as far south as possible (Carolina Crossings) but I don't want to drive past 10:30pm so it all depends on traffic in and around Baltimore and Washington DC, I will hit the Baltimore area around 5:30 :(

Thanks for any info

Chris

  • Ford Truck Guy is right on the route. Stay far far away from DC. 495 is a hot mess 24/7, and 95 will be stop and go from Springfield all the way down to Fredericksburg. You think the Gov is screwed up, just try driving thru there. 301 has traffic lights, but at least they will turn green. The brake lights on 95 will not. I may do that race also now that it isn't Mothers Day anymore. THAT wasn't going to happen lol.
  • Got sort of stranded at Carolina Crossroads in September for a week after our fridge failed & had to wait for a new one.

Great CG. Good people. They get many one nighters passing through.
  • Try the KOA South Forty in Petersburg VA.. It is at exit 40 so that puts it about 50 miles south of Ashland and the Americamps... We have stayed there in the past.. As far as Washington/Baltimore traffic goes,,, I AVOID that area like the plaque..... Take 896 to 50 to 301 and back onto 95 at mile marker 104 , just about 4 miles north of Kings Dominion...
  • The RVResort at the Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids is a nice place. It is right off I-95 at the Carolina Crossroads music place, I think they still have a special for late arrivals just staying overnight. Check rvparkreviews.com and go to Roanoke Rapids, from there you can pull up website and check reviews
  • This campground is slightly north of your range but the way DC traffic is, it could work out. I stayed at Aquia Pines Camping Resort in Stafford, VA just last night. About $50 a night, 135 sites. I thought it was a nice campground. It's sandwiched in between US1 and I95 so it is a bit noisy. But earplugs at night will solve that. Between exits 148 and 143.
