Drove up 81 to 84 this week and 81 is extremely rough. Much of it is in bad need of resurfacing. Sorry I didn't take I78 like I usually do. Also lots of closed shoulders with concrete barriers and very narrow lanes.
Bill, should have gone 81 to 78 to 33 to 209.....like you do many other times....came back from Pa Dutch country yesterday...nice ride..Chuck
yup the wife kept saying it was shorter. knew better but gave it a try. oh well. I did pick up 209 at Port Jervis on up to Kingston to 87/90/91. Nice ride on that stretch. Used 9 to Concord then Manchester then 101 to 95 just south of maine. Visited friends near Portsmouth then up to Boothbay. Been chilly up here so far! - bukhrnExplorer IIIPa can take heart tho, parts of 81 in NY aren't much better, one more problem with the northern winters, frost destroys the roads.
- bukhrnExplorer IIIThey were working on parts of I-81 when I got out of the USMC in 1969, 45 years later, they are working in some of the same places.
I figure that's why PA has so many millionaires, because the road construction workers get paid by the hour. :B - ct1964upsExplorer

The whole ride up was like riding a washboard, so rough and uncomfortable.
We go south this route in the fall and there are a couple of places I wish they would fix but not the whole route.
I think we'll go north of Richmond, Va and take Rte. 301, not crazy about going up thru NJ and paying tolls but our vehicles and our bodies may be in one piece when we get home.

Going to Nashville this Saturday from Gardiner NY and was debating about 84 or going down NYS Thruway to 287 to 78 to 81. Looks like I'll go 78 to 81. Where were the very narrow lanes on 81 or 84? - 3oaksExplorer

That's for sure.
Welcome to the Keystone State.
When traveling in Pennsylvania, assume there will be road construction/repairs. You're usually not disappointed.
I-81 in that area has been in poor condition for a long time.
It's the nature of the beast.
Can't have better roads without road reconstruction. - LantleyNomadI had a blowout on that stretch of 81 a couple of years ago.
The rough road definitely contributed to the tire failure. - gboppExplorerWelcome to the Keystone State.
