We were at Santee State Park the week of Christmas, headed for home on Dec 30.
When we got to the park on Dec 24, it was 65 degrees. When we left, it was 40. We drove straight home, although we'd planned another overnight stop in Tennessee. But decided to keep driving as the temps continued to fall. When we got home (in Indiana, about 10:30 pm on Dec 30) the temps were 5 below zero, and the morning of Jan 2, it was 17 below zero at home and things haven't improved much since.
For anyone traveling, Santee State Park has a really nice campground. Water-Electric on each site, and a dump station. Sites will accommodate just about anything of any size or configuration. And, while there, didn't see a "bad" spot anywhere.
FYI I-26 is a nice Interstate, very smooth, but I don't think I'd like to drive it with ice on the roads.
Good luck folks, if you're "out there" and be safe.
According to the weather reports and Good Morning America this morning, this freeze is hitting from Southern Florida all the way to Maine alone the Eastern Seaboard. But hope none of you have to experience 17 below! At temps like that, the cold against your face just feels like someone biting your cheeks with their teeth. The cold bits that hard! Really!
