Importing a Firearm or Weapon into Canada

F Y I
I spent a couple of hours rummaging through different forums in search of info regarding importation of a handgun into Canada. After pursuing several well-intentioned but dead links I finally came up with:

Importing and Exporting a Firearm or Weapon into Canada

on the Canada Border Services Agency website. It appears to be complete and current WRT bringing a handgun into Canada. My read is that (if your paperwork is ALL in order) it still depends entirely on the Canadian border services officer on duty as to whether or not you have a "valid" reason for importing the weapon. As much as I'd like to take ours along on a long trip (that includes Canada) methinks discretion is the order of the day and I'll leave it home.

P.S. Don't forget that this info is worth precisely what you paid for it. ;)

In practice, a "valid reason" is that you are a competitive shooter, with a record of competing, and are entering Canada for the purpose of competing in a sanctioned shooting match that you are pre-registered for, or you are a LEO or part of a security detail for a VIP that are accompanying into Canada.

Personal defence or just wanting to carry through, I.E. lower 48 to Alaska, etc., are definitely NOT acceptable reasons.
  • Hand guns are a no no. Rifle or shoot gun maybe. If you do have everything in order expect a complete search of vehicle and camper. About every 3 or 4 months some guy gets busted trying to cross the border with a hand gun.
  • I have read that "personal defense" is not a valid reason. And also that going to a sactioned shooting event with evidence of participation is okay. But whatever a person does, they should always be honest with the border guards when they cross.
