- jmaottoExplorerI like 281 then 290 to Fredericksburg.
- lane_hogExplorer III've taken both many times between Fort Worth and Kerrville.
There's a "low" bridge on SH-16 in San Saba, but the clearance is listed as 13.5' (just north of US-190). Should be no problem for most of us...

I prefer SH-16. Lower traffic, fewer trucks, and it's direct to Fredricksburg or Kerrville. - RugExplorer IIWE have towed on both 16 and 281, They both have their good points and bad points. I do not remember a low overpass on this part of 16.
Both roads are good roads.
16 has less traffic and fewer cities that have heavy traffic.
16 goes right into Fredericksburg.
16 is two lane and not very many places to pull over.
It does have a lot of passing areas so its not that bad.
16 has a nice little city park in Gothwaite for a nice picnic.
281 has more traffic and cities that can be a pain.
Marble falls sometimes can be a pain to get through.
281 has a couple of picnic areas to pull over.
281 does have some areas that are 4 lane.
281 does not go to Fredericksburg. You have to take 290 from 281 to
Fredericksburg.
Hope this helps. - Boxer_LoversExplorerI travel 281. 16 has a low overpass that I avoid.
- ng2951Explorer281.
- 1971duster340Explorer281 is the better road of the two. It is 2-lane and 4-lane and has shoulders. 16 is 2-lane all the way, not much shoulder and curves.
- Second_ChanceExplorer II16 between Kerville and Fredericksburg is fine - have done it many times (including with our 36' fifth wheel).
