Indianapolis to Outer Banks

Heading to Rodanthe tomorrow in the motorhome. Looks like the best highway route is down through Lousiville and east through Lexington and Huntington, WV.

Then looking to head down through West Virginia to Greensboro. East therefrom through Rocky Mount and then out to the island.

Did not think that heading through Richmond and down would be the best way.

Thoughts? Any issues on the OBX?

Never been there and looking forward to it with my wife and 8 and 10 year olds.

Indianapolis to I-74 to Cincinnati hit I-75 South all the way to Knoxville.
At Knoxville take I-40. At Raleigh, take 64 on East. You have the option to hit the Outerbanks at Kitty Hawk or go Southward and take the Ferry at Swan Quarter which till take you to Ocacroke Island.

This is pretty much the route I take from Gaffney.
  • The Outer Banks is my favorite place to go on the coast! There is so much to do there but be sure to see the visitors center at Kitty Hawk. They put on a great presentation. Most people do not know that a small piece of the Wright flyer (original) from Washington DC was taken to the moon on the first landing and left there by Neil Armstrong!!! A letter confirming this was signed by Armstrong and hangs in the visitors center.

Our prefered route is down 77 from Huntington to Greensboro then on to Route 64 and Rocky Mount. We follow 64 to Manteo and hit the banks south of Nags Head.
I'm not aware of any major traffic jams on 77. We were down this route and spent Labor Day week at Kitty Hawk, no problems with roads.

On many trips we enter the banks at Kitty Hawk then take a two or three day leisure trip down to the end, catch the ferry at Ocracoke to Cedar Island and come home. The Outer Banks is a rare place of beauty where you can witness beautiful sunrises and sunsets!! You are in for a real treat.
  • Although it is 100 miles longer than the route you posed, I would take the route suggested by DutchmenSport. (Actually, you wouldn't take I-74 into Cincinnati, you would take I-275 around.

If you do take your route, I would stay on I-77 to I-74, toward Winston-Salem, to US 52, to I-40. I don't know about construction in West Virginia, but you want see construction on I-77 in NC. i-77 construction is much further south than you would be traveling. BTW, you would see some of that contraction at i-40 and I-77 if you did take DutchmenSport's (and my) route.

  • Take a look at the route on Google Maps. There is lots and lots of construction going on on I-77 through WV, VA and then in NC. It's according to what time you are going to hit the construction areas as to how long it will take you to get through there.

The road itself is a good road all the way, but you will have to go up and down some mountains, but unless you take a REALLY long way around, you will have to do that no matter which highway you take.
