Is 285 East the preferred route around Atlanta?

We will be heading south on I-75 around noon on a Monday
in Mid January. Wondering if I-285 East is the preferred route. We will be pulling a 5R through this area for the first time so we want to find the best way. We can also vary the time a little as we will be starting from Chattanooga in the morning.
Thanks in the advance Bill

  • A hint: Stay out of the far right lane. It will become "Exit Only" soon. When it does, move to the left again. Going around on I-285 just prolongs the misery.

That's the way we have traveled previously with a car and TC, but I was told multi axle vehicles were not allowed to go through downtown?

If is not allowed no one told us. We have made many trips straight through with our TT and have never seen a sign indicating that.

One other note: Avoid rush hours.

  • Straight through. Do not try to second guess atlanta, I have been in jams at all times of the day and night. Most time just stay on 75 pick a lane and hunker down and boogie. Pay attention to where major interchanges are (285, 675, etc.) and get into one of the farthest lane from them, and you should go right through.
