Been there, done that, also lived in VT. IMHO, use second choice. While a scenic route, your first selection will take a lot longer.
One small tweak to your trip. Get off 84 at exit 27 - 691 toward Meriden. It will take you to 91 and avoid the nightmare of downtown Hartford on 84.
Some folks like to miss the Tappan Zee by staying north on the Thruway to Newburgh, catching 84 there.
Travel safe. Enjoy VT. Quechee is a great area.
