Jersey Shore Beach camping?

Are there any campgrounds on the Jersey shore (from Ocean City to Wildwood stretch)that offer direct on beach camping like in Myrtle Beach?

If not, which campground do you prefer in the area? I'm leaning towards Ocean View as an alternative...

Thanks :)

Wildwood toyed with the idea of having a campground on the beach a few years ago. If memory serves me correctly, they weren't planning to offer any hook-ups, just a place on the sand to park. It never happened. Not sure if they are still thinking about it.

2 years ago it looked like they were installing hook-ups (or starting to), but I didn't see them doing anything last year. Not sure what happened. If I remember correctly it was just south of the convention center.
  • Thanks for the advice all; looks like it will be between Seashore and Ocean view. Now hopefully our dollar improves against the US soon or this trip will have to get postponed to next year ;)
  • There aren't any CG's directly on the beach. We like Whippoorwill CG located in Marmora which is a short 4 miles from the Ocean City boardwalk and beach.

We like going during the "off season" in early June or Sept & Oct. During these month the campground fees are discounted, the weather is perfect and the crowds are less.
  • As said before no beach camping, but we would recommend Seashore Campsites near Cape May, short drive to the Care may Beaches a little farther to Wildwood. There is Depot campground in Cape May itself, maybe bike ride to the beach but that is the closest I know of.
  • Ocean Beach Trailer Resort in Strathmere isn't actually on the beach. It's not even beach front. There is a road (Ocean Drive - CR 619) and a row of houses/businesses between the resort and the ocean. Talk about cramped quarters. If you trip going out the camper door, you'll probably face plant into your neighbor's camper. I'm pretty sure Ocean Beach only offers seasonal camping.

We've stayed in a few resorts in Cape May County. A lot of them are designed for seasonal camping and in some it seems like the short term camping is just an after thought. We liked Avalon Campground and Ponderosa Campground. Avalon Campground offered more on site amenities, while Ponderosa is closer to the beach (in Avalon). Whippoorwill Campground (close to Ocean City in Marmora) isn't too bad, but we were right next to the pool which did get loud on the weekend.

We toured many others when we lived in Ocean City and weren't thrilled with any of them we didn't stay at. Of the ones we toured, I can't recall them all, the nicest ones were along Route 9. The ones that were not along Route 9 just did not appeal to us.

  • We love ocean view. Nice swimming lake with sandy beach.
  • Does not exist in NJ. Myrtle Beach, OBX and Florida has camping on beach. We stayed and liked:

  • I've stayed at ocean view many times and find it very nice. We have a place on lbi and have used sea pirate when there were too many people for the house. Otherwise, cape may is a nice area with several campgrounds.
  • Try Sea Pirate Campground. Its about 10 minute drive from long Beach Island. Campground offers crabbing, fishing above average amenities. Clean family campground.

Just don't book the back part of the campground, its very marshy and the Green Heads will eat you alive!
