Kansas City to Phoenix

Hello all. We will leave the Kansas City area heading to Phoenix (Ft McDowell) December 27th. Weather permitting, we would like to take the shortest route. I know our best chance to avoid bad weather through any mountain passes would be straight south to Ft Worth and over to El Pass to catch I-10 and over to Tucson and then up to Phoenix. I would appreciate any other recommended routes from anyone that may have traveled along this route. See my signature for rv type. I will have the jeep wrangler in tow. Thanks for your input.
  • Once you reach OKC, there are two options. I-40 to I-25 at Albuquerque, tthen south to I-10, or I-35 to I-820 in Ft Worth, west to I-20 to I-10. Not a significant difference in distance. I would just watch the weather forecast closely, chose your route accordingly, and be prepared to have to stop for a day or two if a winter storm is approaching. It is possible for there to be a storm on I-40 and not on I-20, and vice versa. I would tend toward the I-40/I-25 to avoid Ft Worth and El Paso. But weather forecasts would determine that.
  • Your problem is that Texas that time of year can be prone to severe ice storms that shut down I10 for a few days.
I would prefer snow of I40 to ice on I10 so leave yourself flexible even as you drive
