They never "ship in" gravel on any job unless it's absolutely necessary, it's too expensive.
"Normal" is when they bring in a crusher and produce gravel from the oversize material after they've produced the 'bank run' stuff which is normally used for base only.
However, since this road was designed and built as a 'tote road' for construction transport vehicles they didn't bother.
Besides, this road was a freebie, a condition of the deal between Quebec Hydro and NL & Labrador, so they built it as absolutely cheaply as they could. That's why it's not even a full 2 lanes wide standard road.
BTW, I know the Trans-Lab a little better than the average Canadian, between '93 & '99 I drove that route no less than 6 times a year, in the early years of the nickel play, it was more like once a month, many of those times it was during the winter. I've spent a lot of time chatting with the folks who built, maintain and drive that road.

This road has very different financing than the tote road of many years before. It is a road built for modern traffic and for heavy equipment
A) I don't think adequate checking or reading was done before that post was made. The Newfoundland and Labrador government site could have been searched. They certainly posted enough about the construction of the modern Trans Labrador Highway when it was being built.
B) Read the thread well before posting!!!! IF my earlier post had been read before posting, the fact that the Trans Labrador Highway was opened in 2009, should have been seen and comprehended.
How the heck could someone drive that modern Trans Labrador Highway and post a picture of it, not talk to locals to hear about the modern construction, not say "what a difference in 10 years.................. beyond belief.
Don't expect high speeds, take care, and talk to locals all.
