When we were in Hv/GB we learned that the road to Lab City was closed due to wildfire...drove on to Churchill. When we saw cars coming through we asked someone who came from that way and they said it had been reopened.
When we were almost in Lab city, we were stopped by a police car across the road. They were escorting people from that point (a few miles) to Lab city as there were still hot spots. We got through fine and but could see burned out spots right next to the road. The fireman told us that the day before, the road had been closed 12 hours. Now normally a 12 hour wait might just send people home if they lived close enough. The closest town was Churchill and that was potentially 3 hours away or at least a long drive depending on construction delays. Sooooooooooooo, they helicoptered in food and water.
When we got to Lab City, we saw an evergrowing line of cars/trucks waiting to go through the way we came (with escort). However, it didn't seem to be going anywhere. We left before we found out the answer to that question. As we were driving up the mountain to Fremont, we saw a BIG flaming area that looked somewhere beyond wabush. We wondered was was going to happen and we weren't going to be around for anymore road closures.
Now that I read that article, I am glad we were not there to add to the pandemonium. There was lots of activity when we were there including news crew.
Be safe!
