- lbrjetExplorerWe took rt 2 from Montpelier to Banger and back a couple of years ago. Good road. No worries.
- jarata1ExplorerI guess you could take route 2 in mass but your going south to go north not to many west to east Maine roads unless you do mass pike south of Albany to Boston then up 95 to me but you miss so much not going the back roads of vet and nh

I believe the route 2 in question is US route 2 through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, not Mass state route 2.
I would go 149 to Fort Anne, NY, then US 4 into Vermont, VT 22A N to VT 7 N to I-189 to I-89 S to Montpelier. From there, US 2 to Bangor and thence whatever local roads seem best to Bar Harbor. There are some nice alternate routes through the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Following US through Vermont to US 202 in New Hampshire should also be perfectly reasonable, though not my first choice.
