Lancaster, PA to Gettysburg, PA

What is the favored route from Lancaster to Gettysburg? I've heard a few stories about people having some issues with road conditions, clearances, etc., but never seem to remember what route they took. We will be in our rig, friends traveling with us in a 36' fiver. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Highway 30, Lincoln highway is a good route. you won't have any problems. I done it many times in a 35ft towing, Trucks do it headed to I-81.
  • Just take 30 no problems just watch the rotary spots when you get closer to Gettysburg.
  • US 30 west will take you directly into Gettysburg. There are no height restrictions. It's the most direct route. But, there are traffic lights and small towns.

PA-283 to Harrisburg, I-76 (Pa Turnpike, TOLL) west to US 15 south to Gettysburg. A couple traffic lights in the Dillsburg area. No height restrictions.

If you're not in a hurry, my choice would be US 30.

Either way, there are no clearance problems.

I see you're from Greensburg. If you will be heading west after Gettysburg, DO NOT take US 30 west from Chambersburg to Breezewood.
It's two lane, mountains, turns and runaway truck ramps. Not a fun drive. You can do it but, I don't think you will enjoy the ride.
If you were in your car, I would recommend it, as it's a nice drive. But, not in a RV.

    Enjoy your trip.
  • Agree with all of the above, and 2nd gbopp's observation about Rt. 30 west of Gettysburg. Went that way once. Never again.
  • U.S. 30 is the preferred route for us that live in and around Gettysburg.
  • Thanks for the info folks. I traveled rt. 30 many years ago in a car, remembered it being somewhat scenic. I definitely won't be going west on rt. 30 after Chambersburg.

We call them squares, lol. You'll encounter the one at Abbottstown first then the one in New Oxford and if you do come directly into Gettysburg, our town "square". Keep in mind that the traffic already in the "square" has the right away and you need to yield to it.
