Lancaster visit?

Now that folks have given us answers about how to get to Gettysburg from Cherry Hill RV park, we are thinking about hitting Lancaster first. If we do decide to do this, how should we access Lancaster and still avoid the tunnels in Baltimore, skinny bridges etc that are not RV friendly?

What should we see there? Is it worth the trip? It looks like it has become very commercialized! Where would you stay? Thanks!

Cherry Hill to Lancaster is not a bad ride but you want to avoid traveling during rush hour.
    I-95N to MD-32W to MD-29N to I-70E to 695N to I-83N to PA-30E

Interesting-er and interesting-er.. for simplicity, I'd just take I-95N to I695N/W instead of the 32 to 29 to 70 to 695. Are you doing that for less mileage? hassle? etc?

These are all major roads with no lights until you get to 30E in PA.
Lancaster has quite a few campgrounds. All of them are decent. Everyone has their own favorite.
I like Country Acres. It is well run, clean in a very central location but slightly off the beaten and away from the heart of the congestion.
Second favorite is Old Mill Stream not quite as pristine as Country Acres but still a nice park. It is well run. It is in a very central but somewhat busy location right on route 30.
If you have kids there is a small kid amusement park right next door.
If you like breakfast be sure to check out Shady Maple Smorgasbord

You could take the Market St. exit instead of the 30 East exit and avoid a few red lights through the shopping area, but 30 is a direct exit.
  • I would also take 695 west around Baltimore to 83 north to York and then 30 east to Lancaster. I like Beacon Hill Campground in Intercourse,PA. It is next to an Amish dairy farm. And, don't miss the train museum.
  • Camp in Lancaster 2-3x a season. Old Mill Stream has lost it's luster for me. Give Mill Bridge Village a look. I prefer the sites abutting the farm over the creek at this one. The Kopans (owners) just bought White Oak Campground in Strasburg too, which is another choice.
  • We went through Lancaster last summer (beginning of August) enroute from Cherry Hill RV Parkin DC to Williamsport, PA to catch some of the Little League World Series. We have two boys who are 9 and 12 so decided to stop in Lancaster enroute to visit the Railway Museum and train ride, in Strasburg. The whole family loved our day at Strasburg. Cool little town. Amazing attraction. We stayed in Lancaster at the Old Mill Stream Campground. Lovely place. Nice spot on a creek. Would definitely stay there again.

From DC to Lancaster, PA which route to take has a lot to do with accidents and traffic on the day you travel. Pretty sure we took the 695 around Baltimore and then the 83 North to York and the 30 east to Lancaster and had no issues driving our 32 foot Class C on any of it.
