Land Between The Lakes Nat. Rec. Area

Will be leaving Branson and planning on being there for mid-December. Any best route to travel getting there from Branson and campground to stay. Do we need reservations and what can we expect with the weather. Will be there for one week and then to Nashville for a week and south to Alabama for New Years in Mobile. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, 2 Cajuns
  • As Wranglers camp is the only thing open in LBL, I would seriously reconsider plans for December. Wranglers camp is quite difficult to get to, far out of the way, and a long way from anywhere. And, weather may be a big factor. If you do want to go through Paducah, consider I-24 all the way to Nashville. There are are several good choices of campgrounds in Nashville, we can recommend several. Several may need reservations in advance due to Christmas activities in around the campgrounds and Music row. We stayed at Wrangler during the winter one year, would not even think about it again unless I had a horse in the back of the RV.
  • I would take US60 all the way to Paducah, then I-24 to KY 453. KY 453 is the road down the middle of LBL. It changes numbers to TN 49 at the KY/TN state line. Take it south to US79, then US79 into Clarksville, TN. Pick up I-24 again to Nashville.

Weather may be anything--decent but cool, ice storms, pouring rain. Be prepared.

Wrangler's Campground is the only developed campground that is open in December. You might need reservations if you are coming in on a weekend and want a site with water and sewer.

Go to landbetweenthelakes.us for details of facilities and maps. Check carefully for what is open. Wrangler's is fairly close to the small town of Cadiz, KY which has some services and amenities. There are also KY state parks close by, which are options if you don't like Wranglers.
  • Traveling from Branson towards home, we use US 60 to Poplar Bluff, there are several nice looking campgrounds to overnight at. Then pick up US412 at Kennett, on to I40. Natchez Trace state Park or Parkers Crossroads overnight, then on to Nashville.
  • Be advised that all the Campgrounds in LBL are closed after November 30. Canal is COE, and is already closed until March 2017. Wranglers campground is open year-round, but activities and services are quite limited after November. And it is designed more for horses and horse people than RVers. We are not familiar with any other private parks in the area. Lake Barkley state Park campground and Kentucky Dam Village campgrounds are also closed for the winter. Suggest swinging South via us412 and I40 to Nashville. We do have recommendations for Nashville.
  • LBL is a great place to camp. 3 of the CG's take reservations but they are on a separate system from the norm. Two are huge and we avoid them; as we prefer the back country dry campsites. There is also an ACOE at the north end. Reservations are a must there. Don't know what the weather is like this time of year or when they start closing CG's.
