We live in La Paz on the Baja full-time. Campgrounds open and close all the time but there are a lot of them along the Mex 1 route. I think a good share of the ones in the Church's book are still open or have updates on their site and many have phone numbers as briansue indicated.
Also - as we drive the Baja we see so many more campgrounds than those listed - there are many, many to choose from. The only limitation would be if you are driving a big heavy rig. Then you want to make sure you will fit into the spots and can easily get in and out.
If you are driving a truck and camper you should be fine.
