The Orient Point Ferry is out of the way by a lot. Leave early Saturday 6am the latest. Take the Throggs Neck Br. to I95 north. Next take the Cross Westchester (I 287) West to I 684 North. Next take I 84 West to the NYS Thruway I 87 North. As soon as you are heading north on the Thruway, there is a rest area where you can fuel up easily. If you park by the trucks so you can eat first, walk around the building to look for the cut-thru where you can get to the gas pumps. There are other rest areas as well where you can stop along the Thruway. The campground should tell you the best exit to leave the Northway (I 87 becomes the Northway above Albany). The best advice is to have an EZ-pass for each tow vehicle. No need to have a separate one from your autos, just register each tow vehicle's plate with the EZ-Pass people. You can do this online, but I'd call to make sure. The EZ-Pass takes the stress out of paying tolls ; you even get a discount. I have done this trip at least ten times. Good luck.
This a good alternate route. I-684 to I-84 will avoid any traffic problems before and after the Tappan Zee Bridge. We camp every weekend just outside of New Paltz and this is the route we take especially on Friday nights. There is even a great Cracker Barrel I-84 and US-9 in Fishkill we occasionally stop at with room to park your RV.
