- 3LittleDucksExplorerGreat, getting going with the bookings, so far so good. How big is trailer village in the GC? I assume we should book ahead?
Also, we'll be heading up towards Portland from Eureka, will likely camp somewhere along the way. Then across to Idaho and back to Canada. - RaenMarkExplorerAnother possibility in SLC is the Pony Express RV Resort. A little out of town and lots of residents there. Haven't stayed in either this or the KOA, so can't tell you if they're any good. When coming in April, avoid the first weekend in SLC, that's the LDS Church general conference and everything in town is full. if you want to see downtown, KOA also has the Trax (light rail) right outside the gate. It goes all over town and connects with the bus system. You can get all day passes for a pretty reasonable rate.
In Moab, we liked the OK RV Park and Stables. It was a little south of town, but off the main drag and quiet.
Sounds like an ambitious trip, have fun and enjoy - 3LittleDucksExplorerWe haven't done any with the kids, would prefer not to if possible but might be ok for a night here or there while we're en route.

Not sure if this should be in routes or RV parks..mods please move if needed.
Looking at heading to Salt Lake City, then loop out to Arches/Moab, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas (2 nights, possibly hotel). Then head over to San Diego, Anaheim (5? nights), Santa Barbara, Monterrey, Eureka..
Just looking for tips on how to break things up, and where to Camp. Thanks.
Do you do any boon docking? is that good with you.- 3LittleDucksExplorerThanks so much for the great tips! I really appreciate it! We're hoping to travel in April, and beat the Easter rush for the hot spots. Our kids are pretty young, so Disney etc are big draws for us.
We are not members of any organizations at this time. Not sure if we'll actually stay in Monterrey, we really just want to spend some time at the aquarium, so could carry on for a few hours after our visit. - tahiti16ExplorerDennis did a good job overall. One that can make a big impact on your stops is what time of year. GC and all of the CA coast will be quite busy during the summer and Moab will be sold out during Easter week, The Jeepers Jamboree is held that week.
The only positive about the Monterey Fairgrounds is it is the only place in Monterey. There is a small gorgeous campground up on the hill called Veterans Park but it is for tents and under 16' rigs! Do you belong to Thousand Trails or a membership with RPI capabilities?
TT/Naco has a campground south east of SD and another over the hill in Santa Barbara and if you continue up the coast there is one in Cloverdale right off the 101. - Executive45Explorer IIISalt Lake City...KOA downtown. Free shuttle to the Square. Plan on at least a day there. We saw the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform on live TV. Ask at check in for their schedule.
Arches/Moab...Portal RV...stay in the 'owners' section. Slightly more per night but pool/spa etc is worth the extra. Visit Canyonlands and Arches from there. IMHO, the Arches rival the Grand Canyon in beauty.
Grand Canyon...Trailer Village inside the Park. Free shuttles from the campground to all the attractions on the South Rim. If you stay in Williams, the train ride is a waste and you'll be on their schedule instead of your own. Watch for elk inside the campground and protect your sewer hose as the Ravens will peck holes in the stinky slinky.
Hoover Dam...only access is now from the Nevada side. Several casinos will let you park in their lot. Check with security to see if they charge. Worth the visit..take the tour, you won't be disappointed. Several campgrounds in Boulder City that take Passport America.
Las Vegas...the Oasis is the nicest park but expensive. Stay off the strip and prices drop. Sam's Town has a reasonable rate as does the Thousand Trails.
San Diego...several choices...Silver Strand has some beachy areas, but Mission Bay is the best.
Anaheim...ugh! not too many choices because of Disneyland. All expensive. Orangeland RV Park is nice but expensive. Anaheim RV Park, I believe is closed. If you don't mind driving a bit, try Canyon RV Park in Yorba Linda. It's about a 30 minute drive to Disneyland. If not going to Disneyland, I'd check out Dana Point State Park and camp on the SAND. Nice location and lots of restaurants in the marina.
Santa Barbara...the State Parks are the best along the coastal region. Carpintera has full hookups. Refugio Beach is right on the sand. Ventura County has sites that overlook the ocean but are right on the highway.
Monterey...is pricey and camping is at a premium. The fairgrounds is a disgrace. The pier area for dining is very nice. Try Bubba Gump's. If you're looking for a real gem of a campground, try Mount Madonna County Park on Heckler Hwy about 1/2 way between Watsonville, (artichoke capital of the world) and Gilroy, (Garlic capital of the world) Heckler Pass Hwy is also known as California 152.
Traveling north, I would take Hwy 1 and follow it up the coast along the seashore. Beautiful drive and you shouldn't have any problems with your rig. Larger rigs are not advised. Check out all the lighthouses along that area. Further north, be sure to visit the Giant Redwoods. There are many State Parks along that area that are beautiful. Make sure you travel the Avenue of the Giants and do some short hikes among the redwoods.....Dennis
