LT vs ST's - Canadian Tires cries "Illegal!".

My last trailer came from Manitoba and it had LT's ,got into a argument with a trailer retail store (tisdale) re the legality of LT's "no you can't use them they are illegal" !
I pointed out a Carriage carrie lite in their shop that had LT's(factory install) -what about that one ? guy looked like a fish.
My current trailer has 17.5 commercial tires ,wonder what they would say?
It all stems I believe from the superiority of ST's over 'P' rated tires , however people/employees too lazy to think for themselves only hear "ST's are the only tire for trailers ,we know that not is entirely true .
