I've never thought I-88 an especially bad road. I just came north on it a few weeks ago (in my motorhome), and aside from a couple of miles near Binghamton that were a bit rough and one slow vehicle lane going up a hill that was very rough I didn't see anything at all that I thought warranted complaint, much less avoidance at all costs.
Maybe I've lived in the northeast too long and become desensitized to imperfect road conditions....hmmm....
