Massachusetts to Virginia Beach

My wife and I want to tow our fifthwheel down to Virginia beach this summer for a one week vacation. I am near cape cod and want recommendations on the best route to travel. Any input would be appreciated

  • Here's a thought - no matter how you get there, when you hit the latitude of Wilmington, DE look for the signs for Route 13/113 south. Go straight down the Delmarva Peninsula, and hit the CBBT at Cape Charles. About 50 million RVs a day go over it. With propane OFF.

13/113 is divided much of the way down, and when it's not, you're cruising through highly dense and populated burgs like Pokomoke City, Temperanceville, and Onley.

113 is recommended, as it bypasses the Salisbury, MD metropolis, and there's only one traffic light between Dover, DE and Virginia Beach. Maybe two.

There is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel that goes between Cape Charles and Virginia Beach, VA and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on US-50/301 that goes from the Eastern shore to Annapolis, MD. Both allow RV's. The Bay Bridge Tunnel requires that you turn off your propane. There are pullouts just past the toll both to do this.
  • I plan on traveling on the weekend. I want the least stressful route. How many hours should it take? Should I do it in one or two days? Are campers allowed on the Chesapeake bay bridge? Are they're any specials rules for this?
Every time I have traveled to Mrytle beach or Daytona, I have just shot down 95. These trips were usually just a truck and bike trailer or one time a diesel pusher with I sold. When I took the camper down, I had to go 695 around because I couldn't go through the tunnel in Baltimore I believe.
  • We did Cape Cod to southern NJ on a Sunday via I-95 to I-287 to the Tappan Zee, GSP and I-95 again. Traffic was reasonable (Novermber). Stopped at Timberlane in Clarksboro NJ. The next day we went across the Delaware Mem. Bridge and took 301 south. For Virginia Beach, I'd do Rt 13 down the DelMarVa and take the CBBT.

If you're not doing this on a Sunday, I suggest taking I-95 through Providence into CT and picking up Rt 9 to Middletown, cutting across to pick up I-691 to I-84 to I-684, then as above. This looks like a lot of out-of-your-way, but believe me, avoiding I-95 through southern CT and NYC is well worth it. They've been doing construction in New Haven for 20 years.
  • Some people spend time and go way around the city, some go straight thru. Some don't like tolls.
Do you like city driving, are you in a hurry or do you like to see the sites?
When we go south we take I81 but to go to Virginia Beach I think it's to far out of the way and I take the Tappan Zee. Every one will have their way for their reasons.
Tell us what would make it the best way for you.
