Massachusetts to Virginia beach

I'm planning on going from south east Massachusetts to Virginia beach and would like some advice. What is a preferred route for this trip? How much extra mileage/time does it add by going i695 over the key bridge vs. running right down i95? I was thinking about buying smaller Delaware tunnel compliant propane tanks and just run right through vs. keeping my 30 pounders and going around. Thank you in advanced.
  • Going around is no big deal...save your money. Rte. 95 can be the fastest route...usually is. Do not use the George Washington Bridge and Cross Bronx expressway. You will deeply regret it. Most people take 287 over the Tappen Zee Bridge and cut back to 95 using an exit off the Garden State Pkwy. Once back on 95 you can continue south through Baltimore and DC or take the longer, but more leisurely route down the Delmarva peninsula and over the Chesapeake Bay bridge. Safe trip!
  • Cross over Tappan Zee Bridge To GSPW, then take the NJTP south to the Delaware Memorial Bridge into Delaware. Take Rt 1 South to Dover. Pickup Rt 13 South which will take you to The Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel, just turn off your propane tank (s) before crossing. it is a nice ride, much less traffic and plenty of areas to stop at to stretch your legs.

    PS, no tunnels in Delaware
  • Several threads in this forum on this topic in the past few weeks.

    Hudson Valley to Myrtle Beach

    Toll Questions

If you go on Sunday, the I-95/TZ Bridge/GSP route is fine. A good overnight stop would be at Timberlane in Clarksboro NJ (open year round). I haven't done the Rt13 down the DelMarVa route yet, but we did US301 to Fredriscksburg this year.

X2 - We have used this route starting in NJ several times when going to the Outer Banks.

That said, we have also used the Garden State Parkway south to the Cape May/Lewes ferry, followed by route 13 on south. The ferry is a nice ride and a good break from driving.
  • X3 for the Del Marva route. Our daughter lives on the Outer Banks, so we go frequently.
  • Taking I-95 through/around Baltimore, Washington and Richmond takes you out of your way if you are going to Virginia Beach. If you want to save on some NJ turnpike tolls, jump over to I-295 near Trenton. Both the Turnpike and I-295 take you to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. There is a toll West bound. There is no toll on I-95 between NJ and PA, but I-95 goes through Philadelphia which can have a lot of traffic depending on the time of day. We prefer US-113 to US-13 going South in Delaware and Maryland.

If you take the Ferry, when you get off, take US-9 to DE-1 South, to DE-24 West, to US-113 South, to US-13 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel to Virginia Beach.
  • DELMARVA route or go down 301 crossing the Bay Bridge, no toll westbound, & keep following 301 well south of the Potomac. Once past Waldorf, MD really nice ride with little traffic.
  • Quick Note - There is Construction, in a MAJOR way, just south off the Del Memorial Bridge, around the I-295/I-495/I-95/US-13 spaghetti interchange there. It is, at the moment, most directly affecting people heading to I-95 SOUTH from that spot. If you are coming down I-95 from the Philly/Chester/Claymont side, it is not quite so bad. Therefore, at the moment, and for the next few months, if you are headed for that spot of the universe, DO NOT, repeat DO NOT come over the DelMem Bridge from the Jersey side, but instead, hop over the Commodore Barry in Chester PA onto I-95/I-495 south instead. Once you get south of Bridgeport/US 322 on either I-295 or the NJTP, you're stuck and will HAVE to go over the bridge and face potential LONG delays.

If you do hit the bridge, and you're headed to US-13 SOUTH, stay to the RIGHT all the way across and through the tolls. The two right lanes that exit to US-13 are not to bad, it's the two LEFT lanes that head for I-95 where the back ups are.
