Good plan. I think it's wise to leave Mesa Verde for another trip.
Note that Google maps still has you going on the detour up to Page, which is turning off 89 onto Navajo 20 at The Gap. This was because there was a landslide on 89 north of Bitter Springs in 2013. But that is fixed, so you can stay on 89 now all the way to Page. You will ascend a mountain north of Bitter Springs. No problem though, and nice panoramic view.
If you like dams, be sure to also visit Glen Canyon Dam in Page.
