- tres_vagabondsExplorer15 to 163 to the 8 the 8 will drop you on to Nimitz stay on Nimitz and it will take you you to the navy schools and right by the the old naval training center
- 1edExplorerI will be going to Point Loma in San Diego which is s Navy Base..
If that makes any difference in your recommendations... - profdant139Explorer IIYou can take any route you want, as long as you hit LA at 3:45 am -- the bars have long since closed, and the rush hour has not begun. I am not kidding. At 2 am the drunks are out, and by 5:30 am the commute has begun.

+1 and try to get through LA about noon on weekdays or 5a for early or 11p if late.
Listen to traffic reports that might suggest alternate route such as 10 or 60 to 15 or straight down 5 if others are blocked. 405 would be about my last choice.- JohnG3Explorer II

X2 or is it 3 by now? We did that route pulling our 5th wheel. Not bad. - EscargotExplorer5 to 210 to 15

you got unlucky just as you cod do on any freeway in the US when there is an accident.
Once we took the 405 by LAX by mistake :o and it took 3 hours to go 21 miles. I think I'd drive to New York if it meant I'd avoid that mess.:R
I drive the 405 every day from Santa Clarita, 37 miles south to LAX and my office window overlooks the 405, so I consider myself an expert :( , and today will make an 80 mile run to OC. At this point in time, the construction is simply no longer a factor.
Regardless of anyone else's comments here, my flat statement is that if you make the run after 11AM, you will miss the rush traffic. 3 hours is the rare rare exception, by no means the rule. And if there are two in the car, there is an HOV lane 90% of the way across LA and Orange County.
Up to you, its just a car..
Adding a PS to this.. The 5 south of Oceaside can be a nightmare. BUT I have also spent hours stopped on the 15 in the same area. Since a average speed on the 15 seems to run around 80-90MPH (really), the accidents in the area are often plentiful, and there are no easy alternates on either road. - rightlaneonlyExplorerOnce we took the 405 by LAX by mistake :o and it took 3 hours to go 21 miles. - tajRVtalkExplorerI'm going to also recommend the 58 'detour'. It's worth the 6hr20min vs. 6hr flat differential. What's 20 min. for a little peace of mind and not sniffing the car in front of you's butt for 1.5 hrs.?
- tres_vagabondsExplorerTaking the 58 is about 20 miles longer, but that's the way we go, we go to the 395 and take that to the 15. When you get to the Mira Mar area you can hit the 163 if your going down town
