One more suggestion. Cherry Hill has a shuttle to the Metro (subway) station. Do not try to drive on the surface streets if you value your sanity. The Metro has stops at all the POIs, including the Smithsonian. - Just_LeeExplorerAwesome.......... Thanks we are staying at Cherry Hill and will be IN D.C. for the 4th. LeeB - naturistNomadBiltmore Estate -- Asheville is sorta out of the way, but a must see. The gardens are wonderful. That would also get you set for a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
- happynowExplorerExcellent suggestions above. I would add Natural Bridge, VA. See the night show, its worthy IMHO.
- NCWriterExplorerAll good suggestions. Monticello is a must, and the historic Michie Tavern nearby is great for a hearty lunch while you are there.
While you are in the Charlottesville area, you might also look into some of the fine Virginia wineries north and east of there, if you enjoy visiting tasting rooms.
Another option if you visit Monticello is to turn west afterward and cross the Blue Ridge at Afton Mountain on I-64 and drive north on the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park. When you get to the top, you can turn east to DC on Rt. 66. - LarryJMExplorer II

We are traveling June 17th to July 2nd so we will have time to site see...
Looking for suggestions..... Thanks for your time...
Below is just a short sampling of the things I would put on a "MUST SEE", and there are a ton of other sites/attractions such as the Poe House, Tredegar, Hollywood Cemetary, Quartermasters Museum at Ft. Lee, etc. that are worth a visit if time permits.
Williamsburg/Norfolk:
Historic Williamsburg - 3 to 4 days (reinactments/presentations not done daily and take about 7 days to see them all because of schedules. Abt 2 to 3 per day)
Yorktown Victory Center 1/2 day
Jamestown Settlement (Commerical site) 1/2 day
Jamestown Historic site (NPS site, next to Jamestown Settlement) 1/2 day
Va Memorial Museum in Hampton 1/2 day
Marniers Museum in Newport News 1 day (Note some exhibits might not be open due to lack of current funding)
Richmond/Petersburg Area:
White House of the Confederacy 1/2 day
Museum of the Confederacy (next door to White House of the Confederacy) 1/2 day
Pamplin Park 1/2 day
Petersburg National Battlefiled and Cold Harbor 1 to 2 days
One of the Richmond Trolley Tours of which there are several for a good overview of the City and it's history/sties. 1/2 day
Charlottesville area (a little out of the way, but worth the extra side trip for about 2 to 3 day stay):
Montpelier 1/2 day
Monticello 1 day
Ashland - Highland 1/2 day next to Monticello and can be done for both in 1 full day but can be skipped. It is a good contrast between the haves (Jefferson) and the have not's (Monroe)
Charlottesville City Market couple of hours if you are there on a Saturday A.M.
